It can exactly be difficult to tell as to how zyban works in the brain and reduces your urge for smoking but studies have told that the chemical present in Zyban known as Bupropian gets into your brain and hits the neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are released from nerve cells as a message is transmitted. Once the message has been transmitted, the nerve cells then reabsorb the neurotransmitter. Bupropion prevents two of these neurotransmitters, noradrenalin, and dopamine, from being reabsorbed back into the nerve cells. Noradrenalin and dopamine are responsible for moderating mood and various other processes in the brain. It is thought that bupropion helps people to quit smoking by increasing the amount of noradrenalin and dopamine free to act in the brain. Bupropion (also known as Wellbutrin, Zyban, Voxra, Budeprion, or Aplenzin; formerly known as amfebutamone is an atypical antidepressant and smoking cessation aid. Bupropion is different from most anti-depressants commonly prescribed in that it primarily acts as a dopamine reuptake inhibitor. It also acts as a norepinephrine, as well as nicotinic receptor antagonist. Bupropion belongs to the chemical class of aminoketones and is similar in structure to stimulants cathinone and diethylpropion and to phenethylamines in general.

Before using Zyban, you must make up your mind for quit smoking. And start using the medicine one week prior to your quit smoking date. The starting dose is one tablet once a day for six days, increasing on day seven to one tablet twice a day. There should be an interval of at least eight hours between doses. It is best to take your first dose when you get up in the morning and your second dose at least eight hours later. Try to avoid taking your second dose at bedtime, as difficulty sleeping (insomnia) is a common side effect of the medicine.

Zyban should only be taken with the proper prescription of the doctor. You must tell your doctor about your past medical conditions before taking this medicine otherwise it can cause serious side effects. Likewise heart patients or people having serious mental problems are prescribed a very low dose of chantix.You will be started with a low dosage and slowly your dose will be increased depending upon the improvents in you. However if you do not show any improvements within seventh week of your treatment the doctor may prescribe you to quit the medicine. But the most important thing to note is that you should not start taking or stop taking this medicine without the proper prescription of the doctor. Do not continue taking Zyban if the doctor has refused it in your case. Do not take Zyban if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), rasagiline (Azilect), selegiline (Eldepryl), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) in the last 14 days. You should not take Zyban if you have seizures, an eating disorder, if you are using a second form of bupropion, or if you have suddenly stopped using alcohol or sedatives.

Zyban may cause seizure disorder or problems such as epilepsy.

If you have any of these other conditions, you may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely take Zyban:

• Heart disease, high blood pressure, history of heart attack
• A history of head injury, seizures, or brain or spinal cord tumor
• Kidney disease
• Liver disease (especially cirrhosis)
• Bipolar disorder (manic depression)
• It can cause eating disorder such as anorexia or bulimia
• You may want to commit suicide in you first dosage or you can also have high depression
• Tell your family or caretakers to be alert while you are taking Zyban prescription and note the effects.
• Immediately consult the doctor if it has serious effects.
• It can decrease your kidney function
• Cause problems in proper functioning of the heart.
• Can cause tumors in the brain and spinal cord
• People having alcohol should also be careful while using chantix and take proper advice from the doctor.

No medicine comes without side effects and so do Zyban. Everything has its pros and cons. Zyban may cause seizures, especially in people with certain medical conditions or when using certain drugs. Tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions and the drugs you use.

You may have thoughts about suicide when you first start taking an antidepressant, especially if you are younger than 24 years old. Your doctor will need to check you at regular visits for at least the first 12 weeks of treatment.

Call your doctor at once if you have any new or worsening symptoms such as: mood or behavior changes, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, or if you feel impulsive, irritable, agitated, hostile, aggressive, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), more depressed, or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself. Do not smoke at any time if you are using a nicotine product along with Zyban. Too much nicotine can cause serious side effects. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Zyban. Alcohol may increase your risk of a seizure while you are taking Zyban.

There are some important things to be kept in mind while you are on Zyban prescription. Firstly always take Zyban with a glass of water and only after a proper meal. It is also necessary bto note that Zyban tablet should not be chewed or crushed. The medicine may cause some drowsiness and problems in driving and operating any machinery. Be careful and do not go out of your house until you are very much aware of its effects on you. Also do not listen to anyone about its effects and make up your mind as it causes different effects on different persons. Check your blood pressure regularly while you are on Zyban course. There are certain medicines that should not be taken when you are using Zyban. Ask your doctor about it and be careful. If you are not able to digest this medicine. In addition, you are having adverse effects like fits or any other psychological problems treatment of this medicine should be stopped there and then. Do not overdose the medicine. Only take it in that quantity as prescribed by the doctor.
